OpenRouter

4.0/52dm rating

One API for many models, convenient when you need to compare and switch providers.

A single API for calling hundreds of AI models, making it easy to compare prices and automatically switch providers when errors occur.

Overview

OpenRouter is an intermediary gateway that lets you access hundreds of AI models from many different companies through one common API endpoint. Instead of signing up for and managing each separate account, you need just one API key and one credit top-up.

The model catalogue page shows per-token prices, context length and the providers serving each model, which makes comparing before choosing very convenient. According to the official documentation, OpenRouter does not add fees to the providers' inference prices; fees only arise when you top up credits.

The biggest strength for businesses is an API compatible with the OpenAI standard: tools, libraries and automation workflows already using OpenAI usually only need to change the base address and key to work with another model.

Highlights

01

One key for many models

Access hundreds of AI models from many companies through the same endpoint, without managing multiple accounts.

02

OpenAI-standard compatible

You can point an existing OpenAI library at OpenRouter, reducing code changes when switching models.

03

Automatic provider failover

When one provider returns an error, the system switches to the next provider so the request is still processed.

04

Transparent pricing

Per-token prices are shown clearly for each model, and the documentation says no fee is added to inference prices.

05

Free models available

Variants with the :free suffix allow experimenting with a daily request limit.

06

Routing options

You can prioritize by speed, price or stability when calling via variants such as :nitro and :floor.

What it's for

Comparing models before deployment

The operations team runs the same set of customer-care questions on a few models to choose the option that is both good and economical.

Connecting n8n or automation tools

Use a single credential for AI nodes; later, switching models only requires changing the model name.

Reducing the risk of interruption

A sales chatbot keeps working when a provider has an incident, thanks to the failover mechanism.

Testing ideas at low cost

Start with free models to build an internal prototype before deciding to pay.

Controlling the AI budget

Top up prepaid credits and track spending centrally instead of many separate bills.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Create an account

Go to openrouter.ai and sign up.

  2. 2

    Create an API key

Go to the Keys section in your account, create a new key and store it somewhere safe, not shared publicly.

  3. 3

    Choose a model

Open the Models page, filter by need, look at input and output prices and context length, then note the model's slug.

  4. 4

    Connect your tool

In a tool or code using the OpenAI standard, set the base address to OpenRouter's endpoint and paste the API key.

  5. 5

    Top up and monitor

Top up credits when you need paid models and check usage history periodically to control costs.

AI Captain

Real-world example

Illustrative scenario

An online cosmetics store in Ho Chi Minh City wants to use AI to answer customer messages and write product descriptions. Instead of signing up separately for many services, the owner creates one OpenRouter account, attaches the key to an n8n workflow and tries a few models on the same set of sample questions. After a week of comparing, the shop picks a cheap model for quick replies and a stronger model for content writing, all still within one account and one cost-tracking dashboard.

Tips & notes

  • Start with free models

Use the :free variant to test the processing flow, but remember the daily request limit makes it unsuitable for real use.

  • Check data policies

For customer data, review the privacy settings carefully and choose providers that do not keep logs if needed.

  • Note the model slug

Store the model name in a configuration variable so you can switch quickly when a better or cheaper model appears.

  • Include the top-up fee

Fees arise when topping up credits, so top up in sensible batches instead of many small amounts.

FAQ

Is OpenRouter more expensive than calling providers directly?

According to the official documentation, inference prices are kept the same as the provider's; the extra cost is the fee when topping up credits.

Can I use it for free?

There are free models with a daily request limit, suitable for learning and experimenting.

Can I use it without programming knowledge?

Yes, if you use it through tools that have an API key field, such as n8n or chat apps that support the OpenAI standard.

Can I use my own API key?

There is a BYOK feature that lets you attach a provider's key; see the official FAQ page for fee conditions.
